Neural MT course for multilingual citizens

Neural MT course for multilingual citizens

One of the main goals of this strategic partnership is to develop, evaluate and disseminate expertise and materials that will lead to enhancing teaching and learning about machine translation among language learners and teachers, trainee translators and professional translators, among others. We recognize a number of challenges that need to be overcome, however, before we have a truly fit-for-purpose curriculum in contemporary machine translation; one that fully addresses current technological, ethical and societal contexts, and that can scale up to become accessible across Europe and beyond.

The course has three elements:

1. Book
Kenny, Dorothy. 2022. Machine translation for everyone: Empowering users in the age of artificial intelligence. (Translation and Multilingual Natural Language Processing 18). Berlin: Language Science Press. DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.6653406.
The full book and/or individual chapters can be downloaded freely.

2. Didactic activities bases on the book chapters

3. MutNMT platform to learn how neural machine Translation works

How to use this course

Step 1. Download the book Machine translation for everyone: Empowering users in the age of artificial intelligence
Each teacher/student can decide whether to read the full book or select specific chapters.

Step 2. Download didactic activities based on the book.

The activities have been designed with the H5P tool to be visually appealing and dynamic. The activities can be downloaded from the repository and integrated into any Moodle or Wordpress platform. That is, teachers can integrate the activities they want in their classes or courses.
If you prefer to see which activities interest you the most, you can use the browser developed with H5P Standalone Player and click the “Reuse” button at the end of each activity to download only the activities that interest you.

Cómo importar las actividades elegidas en una plataforma Moodle

Open your course on Moodle and go to Content bank on the menu on the left. Upload the activity in the content bank. Then go to Add activity or resourse (where you normally add items) and click on the H5P feature. Write a name for the activity and in the file section to upload the activity, you can go to the content bank and create a link to the activity.

We recommend open your Moodle platform AND download from Github and upload MultitraiNMT activities in Moodle at the same time. This way is faster, and you prepare your class in minutes! Just transfer the activities you want directly to your course!

Step 3. Access the MutNMT platform to discover how to créate and train neural machine translation engines. Platform can be accessed with any Gmail account.
The course may be transferred and implemented in any member country in the European Higher Education Area. The course is designed so that it can be implemented in different higher education (HE)contexts, with a total theoretical workload around 5 ECTS, to be adjusted to different institutional settings by each partner or associate partners depending on the selected contents and administrative requirements. The course is open and ready to be included in:

• formal HE degrees in translation studies as a full course, preferably at the master's level.
• formal HE degrees in language and/or translation studies as separate units where instructors can choose relevant materials by including them in their existing language or translation courses.
• non-formal life-long learning course equivalent offered by HE institutions to students and HE staff.
• non-formal life-long learning course offered by professional associations to affiliates.
• non-formal life-long learning course offered by translation companies to staff.
